LOCATION OF (1) POSITION TO BE FILLED: DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH & SUBSTANCE ABUSE SERVICES, WESTERN MENTAL HEALTH INSTITUTE DIVISION, HARDEMAN COUNTY

This classification, Security Guard 1, currently has an approved hiring rate of $2,436.00 monthly / $29,232.00 yearly.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Education equivalent to graduation from a standard high school; qualifying full-time law enforcement, security or related experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

Necessary Special Qualifications: A valid motor vehicle operator's license may be required for employment in some positions.
 
Examination Method: Non-Competitive selection for Preferred Service positions.

Overview

Summary: Under general supervision, is responsible for institutional and related security work of average difficulty; and performs related work as required.
 
Distinguishing Features:  This is the entry-working class in the security guard sub-series. An employee in this class may be assigned to work any shift in providing a full range of institutional and other security activities, such as protection of public buildings. This class differs from that of Security Guard 2 in that an incumbent of the latter is responsible for acting as lead security guard on an assigned shift.

 

Responsibilities

Performing General Physical Activities:
  1. Responds to calls and takes appropriate action to assist in emergency situations.
  2. Searches for and apprehends missing or unauthorized individuals.
Performing for or Working Directly with the Public:
  1. Controls entrance and exit of individuals by checking for identity, purpose of visit and authorization.
  2. Escorts individuals to ensure their safety.
Documenting/Recording Information:
  1. Prepares and maintains records such as incident reports, vehicle citations, logs of visitors and others, and personal property reports.
Communicating with Supervisors, Peers, or Subordinates:
  1. Provides information to supervisor by telephone, in written form, e-mail or in person to advise of any security concerns. 
Communicating with Persons Outside Organization:
  1. Communicates with law enforcement agencies to report incidents, provide information, and/or request assistance.
Monitor Processes, Materials, or Surroundings:
  1. Patrols facilities, monitors alarms, and utilizes audiovisual and security systems (e.g., TV monitors) to check for security, hazards, disturbances, and violations of pertinent laws, rules, or regulations.
  2. Visually monitors individuals to ensure safety and compliance with policies, rules and regulations.
Operating Vehicles, Mechanized Devices, or Equipment:
  1. Operates patrol and transport vehicles to complete security patrols or transport valuables and individuals.
Controlling Machines and Processes:
  1. Operates two-way radios and other communications devices to accomplish security tasks.

TN Driver Standards

State of Tennessee positions that may involve driving responsibilities require candidates to meet the following minimum driver qualifications:

  • A valid driver's license
  • For the past five years, the candidate's driver record must not have record of the following violations: driving under the influence (DUI), reckless driving, license suspension for moving violations, more than 4 moving violations.
